A first-person boomer shooter action game, with additional RPG and immersive sim elements. In Fortune's Run we end up in cyberpunk dystopia, ran by evil corporations. We encounter many enemies on our way, using an advance melee system, ranged weapons or stealth mechanics to deal with them.
Fortune's Run is an action game in the style of a boomer shooter, enriched with RPG elements and mechanics taken from immersive sims. It was developed by the independent studio Team Fortune, with financial and substantive support from players, drawing inspiration from such classics as Deus Ex, Metal Gear Solid, Thief, or Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.
Story
Fortune's Run transports us to a dystopian, cyberpunk universe. Although the cosmos does not hold many secrets from its inhabitants, most of them are forced to live in poverty. The main character of the game is Mozah Lydd'sekh, a former prisoner who was released from serving his sentence as part of a corporate work program.
The protagonist learns about the existence of a priceless artifact of alien origin and gets entangled in a conspiracy. Wanting to maintain his freedom, he must carefully navigate through corporate dealings. There is also nothing to prevent him from following the trail of the artifact.
Gameplay
In Fortune's Run we watch the action from a first-person perspective (FPP). The game is divided into missions that throw us into different corners of the Zabran star system. Before starting each mission, we receive tips that allow us to prepare for the challenges awaiting us.
These last ones vary, depending on the location of the action and the mission objectives. While some may involve the need for thoughtful steps and quiet action, others require us to be brutal and fast-acting. There is usually more than one way to reach our goals, and we can deal with encountered problems differently.
An extensive close combat system was prepared, with parrying, combos and special attacks, as well as grabs and blows breaking through the opponent's defense. We can make use of both our own fists and melee weapons, as well as firearms. Apart from regular enemies, from time to time we have to face bosses.
In terms of gameplay pace, the game brings to mind shooters from the 1990s, led by the Quake series. The game is not easy, however developers provide us with a wide range of options that allow us to adjust its difficulty level to our individual skill and preferences.
Graphics and sound
The graphic design of Fortune's Run is maintained in a retro style. Main dialogues are dubbed in the game and the story is conveyed through cinematic cutscenes.
