Core Decay Description
Core Decay is an immersive sim in the form of an old-school FPS. The game is a result of cooperation between an independent developer, Ivar Hill, and Slipgate Ironworks studio (whose portfolio includes GRAVEN game). It was published by 3D Realms.
Plot
Core Decay takes us on a journey to the year 2089, offering a bleak vision of the future. After decades of mindless exploitation, the Earth's natural resources have almost been depleted. After the collapse of societies and governments, corporations began to play a leading role in a world on the brink of ecological collapse. All this has led to the creation of a network of conspirators who think they are the only hope for the dying (once blue) planet. Acting in secret, the conspirators try at all costs to save humanity, not minding the sacrifices it will have to make. During the game, we play as a cyborg who woke up in a cold room with no memory of how he got there. The protagonist sets off on the trail of a mysterious organisation, while trying to solve the mystery of his own past.
Mechanics
In Core Decay we observe the action from a first person perspective (FPP). The game includes eleven missions, which lead us through vast, futuristic levels. The locations are expansive and teeming with enemies, which you eliminate using a wide range of futuristic weapons and gadgets. It's worth remembering, though, that as there's usually more than one path to your goal, combat isn't the only solution. You can also try to sneak behind enemies or look for alternative routes, such as hacking computers to unlock locked passageways. In addition, at the heart of each location is the reactor core, and causing it to fall apart will send the security systems into a frenzy and turn their components against each other.
As we progress, we develop the hero by gaining experience and special implants. Thanks to these implants the cyborg's combat potential grows; among other things, they increase the strength of his attacks or give him greater proficiency in hacking. What's interesting, the damage sustained by the protagonist relates to specific parts of his body, causing specific debuff effects. Our knowledge of the game world is increased by messages and notes found along the way.
Technical aspects
Core Decay runs on Unity technology. Although the overall design is old-school (thanks partially to the use of pixelated textures from the late 1990s), the graphics contain some modern elements.
