Release Date: November 13, 2015
Another edition of the world’s most popular soccer manager game series (previously known as Championship Manager) whose consecutive installments have been released annually for over two decades by Sports Interactive. In the game you become a manager of a soccer team, who competes in league championships in one of 50 available countries.
Football Manager 2016 is the twelfth installment in the world’s most popular soccer manager series. As always, the game was delivered by British studio Sports Interactive and SEGA company. The history of the franchise goes back to 1992, and for the first 10 years of its history it was known as Championship Manager. Since then, the players have been receiving new editions that constantly offered additional improvements. This earned the developer a big and faithful fanbase of people who spend hundreds of hours playing new Football Manager games every year.
Football Manager 2016 lets you become a manager of a selected soccer team from the leagues of 50 countries. As usually, players are free to set their goals themselves – you can try to guide a minor local team all the way into the world’s largest stadiums or lead a champion team through another successful season.
The veterans of the series will find here all the elements they loved in previous parts. Players have advanced coaching tools at their disposal that let them set game tactics and decide career paths for individual players. The way statistics are presented is more clear now, and there are new functions that let you control the enormous flood of information necessary to make the right decisions. As a result of developers consulting physiotherapists and doctors, the injury system was modified. Illnesses and body injuries (divided into several different categories), are now more realistic, which means that their influence on the players’ performance and rehabilitation process is different than previously.
Your duties also include the business side of managing a soccer team, as well as PR. The latter aspect was expanded with the addition of some new options, such as calling in press conferences and giving interviews. You can watch your boys play live thanks to 3D match simulations. Over 2 thousand players animations were remade solely for the 2016 edition.
Football Manager 2016 offers two brand new game modes – Fantasy Draft and Create-A-Club. The first one lets you gather a dream team, by choosing from thousands of famous players, and play in a fictional league championship competing against your friends (up to 32 coaches can participate). The other mode lets you build your own club from scratch. You decide the club’s home country and town, colors, and many other details.

Football Manager 2016 makes accessing the more complex features easier: it's both deeper and more user friendly.

The lack of improvements in areas that have stagnated, most notably dealings with the media and team talks, is frustrating though. There are seeds of good ideas in the drift toward an RPG-like system of relationships and stats, but they're slim and seem half-conceived in some areas. In fact, where the game is improved it may well benefit in Touch (formerly Classic) mode more than in the full-fat simulation. And for the first time, I'm considering spending my time there, and in the entertaining new multiplayer draft mode. I probably won't stick with the multiplayer until Christmas, let alone next season, but at least it's something new to sink my teeth into before settling into the usual decades of toil.
