Twinfinite: 4 / 5 by Zhiqing Wan
Eyes in the Dark is ultimately a unique and very distinctive entry in the rogue-lite genre. It certainly won’t resonate with everyone, but it’s well worth a look if you’re in the mood for a charming rogue-lite that looks like it just jumped out of a Tim Burton movie.
Checkpoint Gaming: 7.5 / 10
Eyes in the Dark is a great little roguelike platformer whose clever upgrades system and unique presentation are enough for it to stand out in a crowd. Although the Impediments system can leave your experience a bit too at the mercy of RNG, overall the variety of upgrades and difficulty curve ensured that Eyes in the Dark remained a fair and fun experience. If you are seeking a new roguelike to get invested in, you should definitely consider a trip to Bloom Manor.
MonsterVine: 4 / 5 by Diego Escala
Eyes in the Dark doesn’t shake up the genre, but it doesn’t need to. It’s a really fun, casual roguelike to jump into for a few quick runs with a really cute artstyle and nifty gameplay gimmicks.
Eyes in the Dark Description
Eyes in the Dark: The Curious Case of One Victoria Bloom is an action platform game with roguelike elements. It was developed by an indie studio Under the Stairs and published by Gearbox Publishing.
Plot
In Eyes in the Dark: The Curious Case of One Victoria Bloom we take on the role of Victoria Bloom. The girl's family estate has been taken over by a dark force, which in addition has kidnapped the protagonist's beloved grandfather. She takes a flashlight and sets out on a journey through numerous corridors and rooms in order to confront the evil force and save her grandfather before it's too late.
Game mechanics
Eyes in the Dark: The Curious Case of One Victoria Bloom is a side-scroller. The dark mansion is procedurally generated, so each time you start the game the layout of the rooms and challenges change. While exploring it, we have to not only watch out for numerous traps and jump on platforms, but also face various enemies.
At the beginning Victoria eliminates spiders, oversized flying insects and other monsters created by the darkness using only her flashlight and slingshot. As she progresses, however, she finds other gadgets, useful both in combat (such as a matches that ignite enemies or a bulb that generates a deadly electric arc) and during exploration (for example, allowing Victoria to perform double jumps). Apart from that, the protagonist gains various upgrades to the equipment she already has, increasing its range or damage. All this is important because over time we face more and more powerful enemies.
