Dungeon of The Endless
A science-fiction roguelike RPG with tower defense elements, developed by the independent studio Amplitude. The players take on the role of prisoners sent to the planet of Auriga to atone for their crimes.
Dungeon of The Endless is a science-fiction indie game, combining a tower defense strategy with a classic roguelike RPG. It was developed by the French studio Amplitude, formed by experienced developers who have worked on such games as Rayman, Battlefield, XIII, Call of Juarez or Might & Magic.
Plot
The game is set in the same universe as Amplitude's previous games: Endless Space and Endless Legend, serving as sort of a link connecting their stories. The players take on the role of outcasts who, aboard the Success prison ship, have been sent to one of the uncolonized planets of the Auriga system to atone for their crimes with slave labor and earn the right to return to society. Unfortunately, the ship is destroyed during the landing, while our protagonists, locked in their escape pods, end up in an underground complex created by the ancient race known as the Endless. To reach the surface they must cross the titular dungeons filled with bizarre creatures and mysterious artifacts.
Mechanics
Our main objective while exploring the underground chambers is to protect the power crystal recovered from the crashed ship. Using an army consisting of a combined force of prisoners and guards, as well as traps and turrets, we must defend it from waves of enemies. As we progress through the game we must constantly train our army, develop new tech, upgrade our defense systems and acquire food. Necessary resources can be acquired by finding treasures or purchased from merchants. The player must think tactically and balance all actions taken. Since the game is a roguelike, any serious mistake can kill us, forcing us to start the game over.
Technical aspects
The gameplay is shown from a classic top-down perspective, with the camera only being movable across a single plane. The visuals of Dungeon of the Endless are pastel and three-dimensional, though stylized to resemble 2D visuals. The game features pixel art, imitating classic games from the 1990s. Other than singleplayer, in which we control a team of four heroes, there's also a co-op mode in which each player controls one of the characters.
