Doom: The Dark Ages
Release Date: May 15, 2025
Action, FPP, science fiction, FPS, shooters, Game Pass, very brutal, boomer shooter, singleplayer
The sixth main installment of the popular FPS series. Doom: The Dark Ages takes us to the past, showing us the origins of the Doom Slayer and featuring a unique take on the Middle Ages. The game introduces new weapons (including a unique shield) and an option to control both a traditional mech and a dragon.
Doom: The Dark Ages is the sixth main installment of the best-selling FPS series launched in 1993, which received a kind of "soft reboot" in 2016. Like the previous parts of the series, the game was developed by id Software, whose portfolio also includes the Quake series.
Story
Doom: The Dark Ages is a prequel to 2016's Doom and 2020's Doom Eternal. The creators take us several hundred years into the past, to a specific version of the Middle Ages, allowing us to see with our own eyes the transformation of the Doom Slayer from the last hope of humanity into a hero terrorizing the demons. As a super weapon at the service of gods and kings, the protagonist must go into battle with the forces of hell, which are launching an assault on the kingdom he protects.
Gameplay
In Doom: The Dark Ages we watch the action from a first-person perspective (FPP). The game draws heavily from the achievements of the two previous parts of the series, but also introduces a number of new elements. During the game we go through various, yet equally dark locations, facing hordes of demons. Apart from adversaries known to the fans of the series, we have to face unseen creatures of hell.
We eliminate monsters by making use of a rich arsenal. In addition to iconic weapons like the super shotgun, completely new murder tools are available in the game. We are primarily talking about a hybrid of a shield and a circular saw, which can be used not only to defend against attacks, but also to throw at enemies, as well as a powerful battle axe, used for close combat.
Once again, the key to success on the battlefield is to keep moving, avoid enemy attacks and weaken the attacking creatures (mainly with the use of firearms), and then finish them off at close range, by performing brutal "finishers" on them.
Doom Slayer also has powerful mechs at his disposal - a walking Atlan of impressive size, whose metal fists crush enemies. There's also a dragon we can take to the skies.
Engine
Doom: The Dark Ages runs on the id Tech 8 engine, which is the next generation of proprietary technology developed by id Software studio. The same technology powered two previous parts of the series.

Doom Series
FPS series being one of the forerunners of the first-person shooter genre. The series was created by id Software studio and has, so to speak, three "fathers" - John Carmack, John Romero and Tom Hall. Nevertheless, over the years, teams such as Midway Games and Nerve Software have also been involved in its development. Although the series made its debut on personal computers, over time it began to make its presence increasingly clear also on consoles, as well as on mobile devices.
