Divinity Video Game Series
A series of RPG games set in a fantasy world. The series is the most important brand in the portfolio of the Belgian studio Larian.
The first installment - Divine Divinity - was released in 2002, with the player taking on the role of one of six characters. Theoretically, he also chooses at this point one of the three classes, but it is possible to develop the hero, following a slightly less traditional path, as the skills of the other two classes are also available to him. The title has received a very good reception among RPG lovers. This encouraged the Larian Studios team to develop the idea further. The result was the game Beyond Divinity (2004) counted among the spin-offs of the series. A characteristic element of this production is the presence of computer-generated "battlefields" (battlefield), independent of the main storyline, serving to additionally raise the level of the main experience.
The full-fledged sequel - Divinity II: Ego Draconis - saw the light of day in 2009. We play in it as a dragon slayer, who over time gains the ability to transform into this mythical creature himself. The game lived to see an add-on - Divinity II: Flames of Vengeance (2010), as well as an expanded edition - Divinity II: The Dragon Knight. Divinity II: The Dragon Knight Saga (2011). In 2013, the developers were tempted to make another spin-off - Divinity: Dragon Commander.
The next installment in the series is funded via Kickstarter Divinity: Original Sin, which debuted in 2014, winning the hearts of fans of the entire series and beyond, thanks in part to a great grasp of the essence of classic RPGs. The action takes place long before the events of part one, giving the player a better understanding of the mythology of the series. The player controls the fate of the two main characters, who are the Hunters of the Source, i.e. members of an organization dedicated to eradicating a dangerous type of magic. In 2015, it was released Divinity: Original Sin - Enhanced Edition, an enhanced version of the 2014 production, adapted for pad play. In addition to adding the ability to play on PS4 and XONE consoles, the title received improved audiovisual design, many new quests, characters and even an additional unique ending.
2017 saw the release of the next installment in the series, a sequel to Original Sin, namely Divinity: Original Sin II. This time, players take on the role of an adept of forbidden magic, whom the Source Hunters want to capture. The action takes place a thousand years after the events shown in Divinity: Original Sin.
The common denominator of the games in the series Divinity series is the high fantasy universe of Rivellon, inhabited by, among others, humans, dragons, goblins, phantoms and demons. The plot of each part is divided by a time caesura, which allowed the developers to present completely separate stories. However, there is no shortage of references to other games in the series and easter eggs. For example, in Divinity: Original Sin we have the opportunity to meet the popular among fans mage Arhu from before the transformation into a cat, or the time-traveling imp Zixzax.
The gameplay is based on solutions well known from classic RPG games. The character controlled by the player performs tasks commissioned by NPCs, explores locations, fights enemies and develops his skills. The games do not lack a sizable arsenal of weapons and armor, magical items and spells. Excluding Divinity II: Ego Draconis and its expansions, the player has the ability to create a team from the characters he meets during his adventures. In the case of Divine Divinity he controls the actions of only one, the main character, without having full control over his companions. W Beyond Divinity the player gains the ability to direct the actions of two main characters and summon NPCs. Another revolution occurs in Divinity: Original Sinas in this installment we can already control a team consisting of up to four characters - two main and two side characters encountered during the game. Also in the case of Divinity: Original Sin II we have a four-person team at our disposal. Characteristic for this part is the ability to choose the profession of companions during the first conversation and guide their development according to our liking.
The technical layer of the series has changed over the years. The first installments of the series had two-dimensional graphics with isometric projection. W Divinity II: Ego Draconis however, three-dimensional visuals were used, generated by the Gamebryo engine (previously used in, among others. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion). Divinity: Original Sin, returning to the solution known from the first part, reaches for isometric projection, but remains with 3D graphics with the ability to zoom and rotate the camera. The same is true for the interactivity of the world - many objects can be picked up, moved, thrown - which gives a huge scope for trying to solve puzzles and find secrets. Combat, on the other hand, is fully turn-based for the first time in the entire series. Thoughtful strategy during skirmishes, combined with the interactivity of objects lying around, gives great satisfaction, as many things can be solved in unconventional ways. Also present is a cooperative mode for two players, in which the characters depend on each other, have conversations, and in case of disagreements can try to push their own as correct. In turn, in the latest installment of the series, for the first time, the player is able to choose his hero's race. Also new are the game modes - in addition to Basic, which presents a standard campaign, equipped with several difficulty levels, allowing online or split-screen play, there is also Arena mode geared towards PvP, and Game Master mode, intended for up to five people, in which one player creates his own campaign.
Series Divinity is an example of a series that, after humble beginnings, is gaining popularity. The breakthrough came with the appearance of Divinity: Original Sin - is estimated to have sold between one million and two million copies on Steam (as of 11/10/2018). The real record, however, came with Divinity: Original Sin II, finding more than 1.2 million buyers in the first three weeks. As of this moment, it is estimated that between 2 and 5 million players have bought the game on Steam.
