Another installment in the series of Japanese tactical RPGs, characterised by a specific sense of humour.
Disgaea RPG is the western version of the game released in 2019 in Japan. It was kept in a style similar to other installments of the series - the narration was filled with humorous elements, repeatedly referring to pop culture, and the gameplay formula has not changed much. The developers of the series, Nippon Ichi Software studio, created the game.
Plot
The game takes place in a Netherworld, a place deeper than the deepest oceans and darker than the darkest caves. It is an area filled with chaos, ruled by demons, monsters and evil rulers. Its exact location is unknown, but our protagonists' team is very much at home in it. The goal of each of them will be to become the most powerful ruler in this inhospitable land.
In Disgaea RPG we can control up to twelve different characters. All of them have their unique character attributes, which also translate into skills in battle. These characters include the demon Laharl, the only child of King Krichevskoy, with a mana power of more than 53,000 points, the mad scientist Mao, who starts panting heavily at the mere sight of a potential test subject, or the penguin-like Prinny, who works 22 hours a day without a break in order to redeem his sins and is paid less than even computer game developers.
Mechanics
Disgaea RPG features game mechanics taken from both tactical games and RPGs. During the entire game we control our team, made up of up to 5 characters. We have a lot of freedom when it comes to the formation of the team - we can create it from the main characters or choose one of them as a minor helper. With such an organized team we set off into the Netherworld for an epic adventure.
The game world is divided into small locations. We move between neighboring areas by clicking on the appropriate places at their edges. On our way we meet both friendly NPCs, with whom we dialogue and accept tasks, as well as numerous opponents who want to prevent us from becoming the most powerful ruler in Netherworld. In addition, it's also possible to talk between members of the team, which allows us to recognize the prevailing relationships between them.
Fight, like in tactical RPG, takes place in turn-based system. During the clashes our team confronts with smaller or larger group of enemies. One by one, we perform actions with our heroes, attacking enemies individually or with a team strike, throwing objects at them (or some characters - such as Prinny, which explodes after a throw) and buffing ourselves or allies. All of the protagonists are developed through several stats, with a maximum level of 9999 for each stat. If you want to give yourself an extra boost in battles, you can also upgrade your equipment by travelling in the Infinite Item World or completing Overlord Tower challenges, for which you receive additional rewards.
Technical aspects
Disgaea RPG has an anime-style graphic design, with very diverse and intense colours. Humorous narration is supported by the soundtrack, which is full of songs known from previous installments of the series.
