GameSpot: 7 / 10 by Justin Clark
Deathtrap is a solid genre mash-up that goes on the (tower) defensive.
DarkZero: 7 / 10 by Ian Howarth
There is a lot on offer from Deathtrap and although much of it feels used, it certainly feels nice to just slip into that safe zone and simply just enjoy what you have in front of you.
Dealspwn: 4 / 5 by Jonathan Lester
Deathtrap brings hectic tower defence, satisfying Diablo-style combat and compelling persistent progression together in ultraviolent gothic style. Smart design choices and satisfyingly hectic moments abound, while the level editor is a stroke of genius.
Deathtrap Description
Released for PC, PS4 and XONE Deathtrap is a tower defense type of strategy, developed by the team at Neocore Games. That company has also created such games series as King Arthur or The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing.
Plot
The story in Deathtrap for PC, PS4 and XONE tells about a war against monsters that are trying to breach the real world. The last obstacle on their way is you and your fortress, set on one of the islands scattered across the void. Your job is to do all it takes to prevent the invasion.
Mechanics
Deathrap for PC, PS4 and XONE builds on the mini-game featured in the hack-and-slash series The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing. Gameplay is primarily about building guard towers (those come in different types – from the freezing ones to electrocuting, to deadly machines with spinning blades), which stop the incoming monsters. When starting the game you also pick one of several heroes available, who complements the defensive by killing all enemies in range. Each of the heroes has unique qualities and abilities, which lets you pick one that fits your play style best. As you play you earn points and spend them on upgrading the existing defensive devices or buying new ones, which allows you to stop ever more powerful enemies. Those come in different kinds, the most common of which are legendary creatures, such as gargoyles, as well as beasts created by mad scientists.
Technical aspects
As for the graphics, Deathtrap was built on the same technology that stood behind The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing series. Actually, this game looks almost identically on PC, PS4 and XONE as the second part of that trilogy, creating dark gothic/steampunk atmosphere.
