Cyclopean: The Great Abyss

Cyclopean: The Great Abyss is an old-school dungeon crawler RPG, inspired by such productions as the Ultima series, Questron and Legacy of the Ancients, among others. The title was developed by Chicago-based independent one-man studio Schmidt Workshops, specializing in retro-style projects.

The plot

Cyclopean: The Great Abyss takes place in a world inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft, more precisely - in the GreatAbyss spreading under the surface of the Sn?w Lands. During the game you play the role of an old dreamer, who is trapped here and must do what he can to discover the secrets of the underworld and try to return to the World of the Awakened.

Gameplay

Character draw

Gameplay in Cyclopean: The Great Abyss begins with a character draw process. The game generates for us a hero equipped with basic skills, equipment and alliances with selected inhabitants. If a character does not appeal to us, we can repeat the whole process until we reach the optimal result.

Turn-based combat and other ways to solve problems.

During the game, we view the action from two perspectives. While on the surface the events are presented in a top-down view, after going underground the first-person camera (FPP) is activated.

The gameplay takes place in turn-based mode. In the dungeons we often get in the way of the creatures that live there, so we regularly come to fight with our opponents. However, depending on which character we lead, we also have other methods of dealing with enemies - from stealth to dialogue and diplomacy.

Alliances

Alliances with locals also prove useful, especially in the early stages of the adventure, as they provide us with, among other things, companions who are indispensable support during our expeditions to the underworld. In addition to the allies available at the beginning, the game allows us to find new ones, among other things, by reading the appropriate books.

Character development and parameters

As we progress, we accumulate better and better equipment, allowing us to face more and more challenges over time. Along the way, it is necessary to pay attention not only to the contents of the purse or the level of health, but also to the indicator of our character's mental state.

Graphics

Thegraphic design of Cyclopean: The Great Abyss is kept in a monochromatic style evoking associations with dungeon crawlers of the 8-bit era. The production allows us to change the dominant color in its visual sphere.
