Coffin Dodgers for PS4, XONE and etc. is a humoristic racing game that changes the players into energetic old timers that race for their souls against the Grim Reaper himself. The game was developed by Mily Tea, an independent British studio whose members made their bones by participating in the development cycle of games such as Drive Club, Blur, or Project Gotham Racing series.

Plot

The action of Coffin Dodgers takes place in a small town called Sunny Pines, where a group of old timers are spending their retirement. The idyllic atmosphere of the town is disturbed by the appearance of a new, unexpected resident – The Grim Reaper himself. He sees Sunny Pines as a perfect location to pick-up some new souls without having to leave his rocking chair for extended periods of time. The problem is that the energetic seniors don’t want to leave this world just now, and decide to offer a special deal to the unusual guest – if they manage to prove that they still have some life in them by participating in a series of mad races, The Grim Reaper will leave them alone.

Mechanics

The game allows us to take part in the races as one of seven seniors, facing the Grim Reaper and his army of zombies. We are left with thirteen varied tracks, taking place in four different sceneries which become more eerie as the game progresses. The winner of each race receives access to the next level, while those who lost have to give their souls to death. The last man standing has to race face to face with the Grim Reaper himself.

Coffin Dodgers is characteristic for it’s strictly arcade driving model, similar to the games such as Mario Kart. The seniors drive vehicles that are similar to gokarts, and are filled with modifications which can be further upgraded. There are further elements that increase the fun-factor – the heroes use various bonuses that are scattered around the maps, and equip numerous weapons, from simple walking sticks used to attack your opponents, up to makeshift firearms.

Technical Aspects

Aside from a standard singleplayer campaign that is built from continuing races intertwined by the story marked by its black humour, Coffin Dodgers offers a multiplayer mode, either a split-screen for 2 to 4 players, up to an online mode for up to eight players.
