Card Thief is an original mixture of card and stealth games developed by Tinytouchtales. We play as an experienced thief who has four heists to do. The contents of particular heists is randomly generated so that we can replay them many times. During our missions we will have to hide in the shadows, put off torches, avoid being detected, and steal valuable items. Our actions, events, characters, and items are presented like in a card game.
Card Thief is an unusual card game with stealth elements. The title was developed by Tinytouchtales studio, the devs of Card Crawl.
Story
The action takes place in a fantasy universe, modeled on the world known from the Thief series. The game tells the story of an experienced thief making bold robberies. There are four orders waiting for execution, and their content is largely random, so the whole thing can be played many times, without the feeling of fatigue.
Mechanics
Card Thief it is a very unusual variation on the subject of solitaire. The game is designed exclusively for solo play, and the card game mechanisms have been used here to show the actions of the thief. Fun follows a typical stealth game premise. During the mission, we have to hide in the shadows, extinguish torches, avoid detection and steal valuable items.
However, all this is done using cards. There are always nine of them on the map. They represent a variety of actions, events, characters, and objects. During each game, they are assigned randomly from the deck designed by the devs for each mission. The player must choose a trail through the cards that will lead the thief safely to his destination. The game is also influenced by cards representing skills and equipment elements used to change the situation on the board.
The game treats the card theme quite lightly. The typical formula of the genre has been enriched with a system of light that determines how easy it is to detect us, character progression and health points that play a role when we are caught by the guards. This makes the game much more dynamic than in typical card games and can appeal even to people who do not usually favor this genre.
Technical aspects
The strong point of the game is its execution. Card Thief offers attractive two-dimensional visuals created by Max Fiedler, which was developed in a slightly caricatural convention. The gameplay is accompanied by catchy music composed by Oliver Salkic.
