Story

The story told in Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker is based on the animated series Batman Beyond. After Bruce Wayne retires in the middle of the 21st century, Terry McGinnis takes over the legacy, becoming the new Batman.

When the Gotham City gang known as Jokerz begings to steal components for building supercomputers, the new Batman intervenes. However, things get complicated when Wayne is almost killed by the Joker during a meeting with investors at Wayne Enterprises' headquarters. Since then, McGinnis' task is not only to solve the mystery behind the return of the famous villain but also to avenge his mentor.

Mechanics

Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker features simple gameplay mechanics. We observe the hero from the side, and during the game we complete subsequent levels, fighting enemies with the use of melee weapons or hand-to-hand attacks.

The protagonist can wear one of the four suits, providing him with different combat capabilities. In addition to the standard outfit (in which he uses nunchaku and a disc, among others), he also has an offensive suit (providing him with more strength), a defensive outfit (thanks to which he can use two shields to protect himself from enemy attacks), and finally a disguise that guarantees him greater agility (when wearing it, Batman can make double jumps or attack his opponents from a jump).

The rich arsenal is complemented by gadgets like a microphone (enabling us to locate enemies through closed doors) or rocket boots (thanks to which we can reach higher places). Additionally, from time to time the hero encounters useful power-ups that increase his stamina and regenerate health, as well as increasing the power of his attacks and increasing his defense.

Game modes

Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker consists of two game modes. The basic one is the Story Mode, in which we get to know the story told by the developers; the whole thing can be completed on one of three levels of difficulty. It is complemented by the Time Attack mode, where we try to defeat our opponents in the shortest possible time.

Technical aspects

Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker features average visuals made in the 2.5D technique. The whole thing adops a style reminiscent of the original animated series.
