Armored Core is the first installment of the mecha battle game series by FromSoftware, later responsible for creating the famous Souls series. The title is a TPP action game.
Story
A world of the future. As a result of global war, the majority of humanity on Earth was destroyed. The difficult conditions on the planet forced the survivors to take refuge under the surface. Over the next few decades, international corporations, constantly competing for influence, gained a strong position. The leading ones are Chrome and Murakumo Millenium. The player takes on the role of a rookie mercenary, one of the Ravens, who undertakes various missions for individual companies and other clients.
Mechanics
The playerstake control of gigantic, state-of-the-art mechs, the eponymous armored cores. As part of their missions, they fight against numerous groups of similar mechs. Battles take place on open maps, in underground complexes, ruins of cities or reminiscent of the recent war of huge deserts on the surface of the Earth. The creators have put a number of different types of weapons, from rifles and missiles, to laser swords for short-distance enagements at the players' disposal. The hero earns money for completing tasks, and sometimes also prototype parts, which they can then use to repair damage or modify their machine.
Assembling the mech from the available parts is an important part of the game and introduces a strategic element to the fun. Players need to modify their machine according to the mission requirements, as well as adjusting parts in terms of weight or energy consumption to make the whole design work properly.
Game modes
In addition to the story mode, the creators from FromSoftware have also prepared a module for multiplayer fun. Two players can compete on split screen on a single console or on separate devices and TVs as part of a Link cable connection. Duels take part on large, styled maps using standard designs or constructions created and saved by players.
Technical aspects
Armored Core relies on a more arcade fun model, allowing for spectacular and dynamic duels of big robots. The devs from FromSoftware invited Shoji Kawamori, known for his work on the iconic anime Macross, who helped to prepare mech projects. Fans of the aforementioned productions from Japan will easily notice the characteristic elements of the artist's style.
