Artificial Defense is a real time strategy game that includes features of shooters and tower defense games, set in unusual universe of computer’s system components. It is the work of German independent developer Thiemo Boulder (aka ONEMANGAMES), and it has been awarded at Unity Games Developer Contest 2016.
Plot
Artifical Defense puts in role of computer system and makes us defend our servers from intruders and viruses. We starts as simple, analog system and progress through the game to become powerful A.I., with our advance being symbolized by seven levels, each with seven challenges with raising difficulty and its own color – from blue to black. The only and obviously very important resource we use in game is RAM (operational memory), which we produce by ourselves and then use in battles and to upgrade our offensive and defensive capabilities.
As far as its gameplay goes, Artificial Defense combines three genres. Offensive actions use shooters scheme, as we use 21 weapons to eliminate threats to the system by ourselves. The problem is that most targets are moving, shooting costs us certain amount of RAM and reloading takes some time. Because of that, a system borrowed from tower defense title is much easier option, letting us use – again – 21 types of sentries (and 7 that produce RAM), which will dispatch enemies in proper way. Additionally, RTS mechanics are put to use when we must recapture sectors taken by intruders, like databases, firewalls etc.
Technical aspects
Artificial Defense for PC uses popular Unity engine, which is often used by independent developers. However, it stays true to its theme and uses simplistic (if not minimalistic) visuals, with levels resembling boards of computer’s components. The soundtrack presents several tracks, linked to certain levels.
