Arma III Laws of War is an expansion to a military simulator Arma III released in 2013. This add-on focuses on the International Development & Aid Project and has been developed in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross. The DLC pack has been announced as the Project Orange in March 2017 and is the first product of Bohemia Interactive Amsterdam.
Plot
One of the main elements of the expansion described herein is the story campaign entitled Remnants of War. During the game, a player assumes the role of Nathan MacDade – a bomb disposal expert working for the International Development & Aid Project (IDAP). His main objective is to disarm mines and unexploded ordnances remaining after the war between two fictional factions – Altis and Stratis. Dade agrees to an interview with an investigative journalist, which forms a retrospective story background to the consecutive missions. During the interview, players can observe the conflict from a different perspective and learn what has really happened in the city of Oreokastro.
Mechanics
The Laws of War for PC gives players at their disposal an entirely new faction: International Development & Aid Project. It is a non-governmental organization dealing with extraordinary crises and standing guard for human rights during armed conflicts. Apart from the distinctive uniforms and special equipment, the IDAP operatives get at their disposal a new vehicle and a wide range of gadgets.
The main mean of transportation for the members of the organization is a special van, equipped with gear fitting one’s needs and parameters of a task at hand. It can be modified to e.g. transport relief supplies, carry civilians, deliver first aid, and handle sapper assignments. It is worth mentioning that in the last case, sappers are also aided by a special drone designed as a safer alternative to manual bomb defusing. Another version of this small machine is adjusted to drop fliers. This expansion features also an antipersonnel mine distribution system called APERS.
Technical aspects
The Laws of War expansion for PC has been released together with a large patch available free to all those who own a copy of the game. The patch introduces some additions to the gameplay, such as the unexploded ordnance simulation, mine system improvements, flyer distribution mechanic, several types of cluster bombs, and an additional chapter in the manual on the martial law. Moreover, the expansion features a virtual training and an open day at the IDAP.
Misc.
As an expression of their gratitude, developers from Bohemia Interactive decided to offer a part of their profits from selling the Laws of War expansion in aid of the International Committee of the Red Cross. The final amount has been announced a year after the premiere, at the developer’s website.
