Arma III Creator DLC: S.O.G. Prairie Fire is an big add-on for the 2013 realistic shooter Arma III. It was developed under the watchful eye of US military veterans (led by former members of the MACV-SOG unit, i. e. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam - Studies and Observations Group, which conducted covert operations in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia between 1964 and 1972) and Vietnamologists.

The add-on was developed as part of the Creator DLC programme, in which the authors of the original - Bohemia Interactive Studio - allow other developers to design extensions to their game. Thus, behind its development are not the original developers, who undertook the responsibilities of the publisher, but the Savage Game Design team. It is worth noting that this is the second DLC of this type; the first was the Arma III Creator DLC: Global Mobilization - Cold War Germany.

Plot

Arma III Creator DLC: S.O.G. Prairie Fire takes us to the Indochinese Peninsula, at war between 1955 and 1975. The pillar of the expansion is a co-op story campaign set in 1968. We play as a member of the MACV-SOG "Columbia" unit, which, operating in Laos and Cambodia, deep in enemy territory, must destroy the 559th PAVN Transport Group and thus stop the flow of resources on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. What complicates matters is the fact that the People's Army of Vietnam follows him, trying to track him down and neutralise.

Mechanics

Like the Arma III game, Arma III Creator DLC: S.O.G. Prairie Fire features an unusually high level of realism. The add-on does not introduce revolutionary changes in the mechanics, so we received a complex, tactical shooter, in which the key to success is primarily a strategic sense, caution and taking well-considered actions, as well as the ability to work in a team.

The developers offer us a vast map of Cam Lao Nam, with an area of 300 square kilometres, covering the territories of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. During the game we can choose to fight on the side of the United States Army, the Army of the Republic of Vietnam, the Vietnamese People's Army or the Vietcong. The expansion significantly expands the arsenal, introducing 55 new weapons and 43 elements of additional equipment (including grenades and traps), as well as previously unavailable uniforms, waistcoats, backpacks, accessories and headgear. In addition, 54 vehicles and machines and 32 stationary weapons appear.

Game modes

Apart from the already mentioned story campaign for co-op mode, in which up to 14 players can play, in Arma III Creator DLC: S.O.G. Prairie Fire we will find 9 scenarios and bonus missions created with multiplayer gameplay in mind, as well as 5 single scenarios designed for solo play.

Technical aspects

Arma III Creator DLC: S.O.G. Prairie Fire developers have made efforts to reflect as closely as possible the realities of the conflict on the Indochinese Peninsula. This also applies to the soundtrack, thanks to which during the game we can hear realistic sounds made by weapons and vehicles, leaves rustling under the boots of soldiers, whispers of lurking in the thicket enemies or screams of the wounded. Apart from that, fourteen music tracks from the verge of rock and blues have been implemented in the add-on, which were recorded using authentic Vietnamese musical instruments; they are complemented by Vietnamese radio messages describing the course of military actions.
