The American Civil War is another attempt to transfer the realities of the American Civil War to the computer. This popular - especially overseas - topic was taken up by Interactive Magic, known for its cult Capitalism series and a number of successful aerial simulators.
In 1861, the American nation divided into two enemy camps that stood up against each other in a bloody civil war that claimed more than 600,000 lives. As you can easily guess, we can stand on both the side of the Union and the Confederates. The game recreates the complete course of the war from the opening Battle of Sumter to the capitulation of General Lee at Appomatox in 1865.
American Civil War is a classic turn-based strategy in which we command units located on strategic maps, which, of course, represent authentic areas of warfare. However, the outcome of the fight is influenced not only by our leadership and logistic skills, but also by the economic background of the army. The outcome of the battle can be determined by the size and equipment of the units, the battlefield (including its shape and current weather), the fatigue and morale of the soldiers, the skills of the commander, the level of experience of the troops and the quality of the weapons used by the army. The different scenarios set different conditions for victory, allowing players to use different political, military or economic strategies, depending on their needs.
Graphic design of the game is at a fairly high level. The maps are well worked out and reflect the terrain, while the icons symbolizing the units are not very fancy, but legible. The interface is very friendly, thanks to the use of Windows capabilities. The soundtrack of the game consists of several music tracks in CD Audio format, containing authentic songs and songs from the war period. In addition, on a separate CD you will find a multimedia encyclopedia of the Civil War, containing an extensive history of the conflict, dozens of maps and photographs, as well as biographies of the most famous commanders.
