The seventh installment of the popular Battleground strategic series, created by John Tiller and TalonSoft. The title takes players to the realities of the American Civil War, but this time the creators focus on two less known skirmishes that took place near Manassas, Virginia.
The first Battle of Manassas (also known as the first Bull Run) took place on 21 July 1861 and was the first significant land battle of the war. The skirmish ended with the victory of the Confederates commanded by General Joseph E. Johnston. In August 1862, the conflict between the warring parties took place again. For the second time, the Confederates led by Robert E. Lee emerged victoriously from the fight, defeating the EU army led by John Pope. It was a decisive campaign battle in North Virginia.
Battleground 7: Bull Run focuses on the two battles mentioned above, which have become popularly known as "bull rallies". In addition, we can take part in two smaller battles: Blackbun's Ford, which took place 2 days before the first battle of Manassas and Brawner's Farm, fought on the eve of the second Bull Run. In total, this gives rise to 22 historical and hypothetical scenarios in which we can stand on either side of the conflict. Other elements of the game do not differ from the standards of the series, to which the creators of TalonSoft accustomed us: hexagonal map, on which we move similarly as in strategic board games and realism, manifested in a very accurate recreation of battlefields, armament or uniforms of units.
The game frame is at a high level, characteristic for the whole Battleground series. Since the second installment of the series, the creators have been using the same engine, Battleview, which, due to the title, undergoes only minor cosmetic modifications. This time, the focus was on light irrigation of graphics, which in the two years since the release of Gettysburg has been a little older. Apart from the competition with the computer, the authors have made two-player games available; the game can be continued via modem, e-mail or alternately at one computer.
