Ardennes by John Tiller and TalonSoft studio. This time the creators take part in a workshop on a topic from the history of the United States, allowing players to take part in the bloodiest battle of the American Civil War.
The Battle of Gettysburg took place on 1-3 July 1863 between the forces of North Virginia, under the command of General Robert E. Lee, and the Descendants Army, commanded by George Meade. The army of the Confederates suffered a disastrous defeat, incurring huge losses of human life. Over three days of fighting have claimed more than 50 000 dead, injured and missing on both sides, and the battle itself has become a turning point in the civil war, from which the Confederacy has been steadily moving towards collapse.
Battleground 2: Gettysburg offers players 25 single scenarios and the possibility to play the entire battle of Gettysburg. As in Battleground: Ardennes, we can stand for any side of the conflict. The game takes place in a turn-based system, and each turn represents 20 minutes of real time (or an hour during night-time activities). The arena of struggle is meticulously reconstructed battlefields, including hills, roads and homesteads. The map is divided into hexagonal fields, each of which represents about 125 yards of actual distance. Warfare is hindered by the "fog of war" introduced by the authors. In addition to playing alone, we can of course compete with other players via modem or in "play-by-email" mode.
The game was released relatively quickly after its predecessor and runs on the same original Battleview engine. It offers both a classic 2D view created for traditionalists, as well as a slightly more modern isometric perspective. The visual layer of Battleground has been lightly irritated, which resulted in slightly higher hardware requirements. Like its predecessor, Gettysburg treats us with FMV interrupts, introducing us to the reality of a given scenario and the key moments of the battle. In the sound layer of the game we will hear authentic songs from the period of the Civil War, performed by the American folk artist, Bobby Horton.
