A remake of the 2002 RTS game, mixing ancient history with fantasy elements. In Age of Mythology: Retold we can control four civilizations, building armies of real & mythical units, as well as using spells. The game offers campaign, challenge and multiplayer modes.
Age of Mythology: Retold is a remake of the 2002 strategy from the authors of the popular Age of Empires series. The game depicts the struggles of four nations, in which both mythical creatures and ancient gods participate in the conflict. This new version of the popular RTS received a modernized audiovisual layer and a new interface, as well as a number of improvements designed for both series veterans and new players.
Gameplay
Age of Mythology: Retold is a real-time strategy in which the gameplay is based on managing units (civilians and the army), collecting resources and constructing buildings. It is also necessary to conduct research on new technologies and train the army. Beyond the economic or military layers, the pantheon of gods plays a big role, different for each nation (we can choose from Greek, Egyptian, Nordic, and Atlantean civilizations).
Depending on our choices, we can gain access to useful offensive spells (e.g. earthquakes, lightning strikes, summoning of the dragon Nidhogg) or supportive spells (including summoning of rains that fertilize the soil and grant help from dryads). We can also add mythical units to our army (Cyclops, Pegasus, Medusa or Cerberus), as well as minor deities whose skills can determine the fate of many battles.
The remake offers an extensive campaign consisting of fifty missions. Throughout the plot, we traverse various ancient lands, participating in the siege of Troy, fighting battles in the wastelands of Midgard, and following the secrets of Egypt.
Game modes
Apart from the campaign and challenges intended for singleplayer, the game also allows for multiplayer fun. In Age of Mythology: Retold there is an online mode for up to twelve people, as well as the Arena of Gods - a series of trials that we can try to complete in cooperation with other fans. The replayability of scenarios is ensured by procedurally generated maps, and thanks to the built-in editor, we can create new places for waging wars.

Hardcore Gamer: 3.5 / 5 by Cory Wells
Age of Mythology: Retold eliminates the need to play the original titles as it takes everything from both of those games, modernizes it and brings the experience to 2024. While it lacks the polish of Age of Empires IV, the game remains extremely fun thanks to the mythological units and God Powers that can be recharged and used multiple times. This aspect adds more depth that may have not been there for some players for AOE4. The gameplay aspect does still feel like a RTS from 2002, but the campaign, skirmish and the option of PVE multiplayer will supply a ton of hours to dive into Retold.
Game Rant: 4 / 5 by Max Borman
Age of Mythology: Retold brings the beloved original RTS back with a whole new look and feel, and so far, it has delivered everything fans could want.
Gaming Nexus: 7.5 / 10 by Elliot Hilderbrand
Some RTS remasters have been terrible, chock full of issues. Age of Mythology: Retold is not one of them. Some bumps, like the terrible, lifeless voice acting are hard to get over. I love the idea of being able to play with a controller, and the support is there, it still doesn't feel right. The campaign is great once you get into it, and there is plenty to keep a single player happy for some time. This one is hard not to recommend to fans of the RTS genre who like to relive a bit of their younger days, but might be a bit to much to chew off for the casual fan.
The main pros of the game
- Enhanced Graphics and Performance: Many users praise the improved graphics, detailing that the visuals enhance immersion and bring the mythological elements to life.
- Quality of Life Improvements: The game includes various updates that make gameplay smoother, such as better unit pathing, rebalancing of powers, and a revamped user interface.
- Nostalgia Factor: Long-time fans appreciate that the game retains the essence of the original while modernizing certain aspects, making it enjoyable for both new players and returning fans.
- Diverse Content: The inclusion of new game modes like "Arena of the Gods," mod support, and well-structured campaigns adds replayability and variety.
- Community Engagement: Developers are noted for being responsive to community feedback, implementing changes based on player suggestions.
The main cons of the game
- AI Issues: Some users report that the AI can be unbalanced, either being too easy or overly aggressive, which can detract from the gameplay experience.
- Voice Acting: The new voice acting has received criticism for not matching the quality of the original.
- Content Stripping for DLC: There are complaints about certain gods and content being removed from the base game to be sold as DLC, leading to feelings of corporate greed.
- Bugs and Technical Issues: Several users experienced bugs, crashes, and performance issues, particularly in multiplayer modes, which hindered their enjoyment of the game.
The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users
- More Playable Gods and Content: Players express a desire for additional pantheons and campaigns, particularly from Celtic and Meso-American mythologies.
- Improved AI Options: Some players miss the variety of AI difficulties present in the original game, feeling that the current options are limited.
- Replayability of New Content: Concerns were raised regarding the replayability of the new mode "Arena of the Gods," which some found lacking in depth.
- Original Features: Users noted the removal of certain gameplay elements from the original, such as hunting dogs, which they feel should have been retained in the remaster.
