What is Pillars of Eternity?
Pillars of Eternity is a classic isometric RPG set in a fantasy world. In the game, we play a Watcher who's able to see a person's past incarnations – in PoE, reincarnation is one of the main themes. Thanks to this skill, it's easy to identify cases of a phenomenon that has plagued the world, i.e. children born without a soul. The main goal of the player is to unravel the mystery of the existence of such people in a universe that's based on reincarnation.
As a Watcher, we travel through a dozen locations in total, gather our own team to use in combat, and build and improve our own fortress. The game strongly emphasizes development of the base and characters, and during combat, it allows you to use an active pause to decide your next moves. Pillars of Eternity deftly combines a focus on the story with strategic thinking necessary to push the game's action forward.
Why is it worth playing?
In Pillars of Eternity, we have a huge impact on the progress of the story. The game offers many options in the narrative fragments, and the course of the game depends on our choices. Often, in moments pertinent to the development of the story, we're transferred to a separate screen, where we can make decisions about the hero's statements or actions. This mechanic, along with the presence of the stronghold theme in the game, distinguishes PoE from similar RPGs.
The fortress system itself is associated not only with the development of heroes, but also with side missions, of which there are many. This title provides long hours of gameplay filled with various mechanics, so despite its length, it's not boring at all. When it comes to classic RPGs with unusual ideas, Pillars of Eternity is definitely on the top of the list.
