Indiana Jones is an icon of new adventure cinema. The fierce archaeologist has conquered the hearts of viewers hungry for a spectacle that is light, funny and full of suspense until the last minute. Eight years after the premiere of the first part, The Last Crusade was still popular enough to earn $474 million (for a $48 million budget). It received two Academy Award nominations (for Best Original Score and sound).
Many factors contributed to the success of the series – a fresh look at an adventure film, an unusual script, lively, entertaining dialogues, and an iconic theme. Most important, however, was Harrison Ford. No wonder Steven Spielberg, even now that the actor is approaching his 80s, doesn't want to replace him with someone younger. Ford doesn't portray Indy – he is Indy. Intelligent, dignified, and at the same time brash and daring. The perfect mix of all the best features of a good and a bad boy, all in a patient explorer and brave traveler. He was exactly the kind of hero that cinema needed.
The plot of The Last Crusade was constructed on the principle of "more, better, harder". Viewers were then given a thickly humorous story about the search for a legendary artifact. There is no shortage of self-mockery and references to other works of pop culture or 20th-century history. It's one of the best films in its genre and, despite being 30 years old, it's still fresh in many ways.
