Amelia

If there is a film without supernatural themes and yet can be called magical, it is Amelia. It has everything it takes to create a memorable fairy tale – the charming streets of Paris, the sensitive main character, the beauty hidden in everyday activities and a pinch (all right, even a few fists) of sentimentality.

Amelia is not a romantic comedy. It is also far from a classic melodrama. And yet it is love that is the film's most important message. But it's not just romantic love, partner love – it's also the one towards strangers. Yes, there may be no shades of grey here, and the protagonist is a little too perfect, but it's not about realism.

Some scenes work as parables, while others simply create the mood of a surreal fairy tale. This specific plot mix is perfectly kept within an incredibly atmospheric audiovisual setting. The individual cadres were computer-processed (not as popular at the time as today), and colors based on green, blue and red were used. All to make Amelia more like cinematic poetry than prose.

Audrey Tautou portraying Amelia is a masterful actress. By retaining the plot exaggeration, the French actress adds authenticity to the character and allows the viewers to believe that somewhere in Paris there can really live an Amelia convinced of the good hidden in people.
