- Release date: 2018
- Genre: platformer
- Platforms: PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
The incredibly difficult platformer about the adventures of red-haired Madelaine has two fathers – Matt Thorson and Noel Barry – and was developed over a four-day jam. The prototype was ambitious and consisted of thirty levels, completing which required precision and reflexes. After the jam, the Canadians invited a Brazilian studio MiniBoss to work on the visuals. The game was released in 2018 and peaked the industry charts. In 2018 alone, Celeste sold over 500,000 copies. The developers did not rest on their laurels and added further extensions to the game. Suffice it to say that Celeste currently has over 800 levels.
Although the game has undergone a significant evolution from the original idea to the finished product, it's still possible to play the original game. Celeste Classic, i.e. a prototype created for the game jam, is available as a mini-game hidden in one of Celeste's levels.
The game was also famous for its Assist Mode that allows you to modify the way you play. Players can use it to regulate movement speed, make the protagonist immortal, or activate unlimited dashes. It was designed for people, who lack mental or physical capacity to play and complete games, and was rightfully commended.
