Mass Effect – series
- Release year: 2007
- Developer: BioWare
Mass Effect games revolutionized the genre quite a few years ago. The first installment of BioWare's space opera showed that the combination of shooter and RPG works especially well in a science-fiction setting. The epic story created by the Canadian studio ushered the genre into a new era. There was none of the strenuous loot gathering, reloading the game even after winning a fight, or the need to repeat boring boss battles endlessly – all that was avoided in the first game.
Mass Effect 2 was a mechanical masterpiece that polished and refined the formula almost to perfection. The gameplay was pure pleasure. BioWare wizards served up an engaging and original story without unnecessary boredom, irksome interactions and repetitive side quests. Each character could boast an extremely interesting persona. Sure, some of the heroes were a bit too colorful, but after all, Shepard needed quite a team.
What delighted in the game was also the extremely skilful pacing. The calmer stages lasted long enough to prepare us for the adrenaline rush at the climax. Both in the context of one production and the entire series. The events really pick up the pace in part three (which is likely the best-optimized AAA game ever). And even if the ending seemed disappointing to many fans, Shepard's adventures are still incredibly fun to experience. Andromeda, also available in Game Pass, is another decent story in the universe.
