9. Urtuk: The Desolation. Best strategy & RTS released in 2021

Table of Contents

  1. Developer: David Kaleta
  2. Platform: PC
  3. Game summary: a somber title focused on turn-based combat affected by the terrain

Urtuk: The Desolation might be easy to overlook, but it's actually quite an interesting game. It was created by a single developer from Slovakia - David Kaleta. Nevertheless, Urtuk turns out to be a complex production which combines elements of RPG and strategy games. In addition, the in-game campaign is procedurally generated, so each subsequent playthrough provides a completely unique experience.

In this game you play as the titular Urtuk, a man who has been affected by a horrific mutation as a result of the experiments he has undergone. His condition worsens every day and the player's goal is to find an antidote to save his life. Other unfortunates, struggling with the same fate, will help you in your search.

While playing Urtuk: The Desolation, players are transported to an open world that they can explore at their leisure. Along the way, they will encounter numerous opponents, whom they will have to face in turn-based combat on small arenas with a hexagonal grid. During battle, the terrain plays an important role, as well as the abilities you have selected while developing your characters. The game's beautiful visuals are definitely something to brag about. Fans of easily overlooked indie games should definitely give David Kaleta's work a chance.

The game's biggest pluses:

  1. a procedurally generated campaign;
  2. strategic battles with lots of tactical possibilities;
  3. an interesting, gloomy graphic style.
