Death Mark is often quoted as the absolutely most frightening visual novel, and a chilling horror. However, this is not entirely true, because even the most fearful players can get through this game, preferably not in headphones, though, but on silent speakers. In SHDM we play a man who remembers little about himself and discovers a mysterious birthmark on his forearm. Not only that; the protagonist encounters others with the mysterious imprint on their bodies too. Rumor has it that the appearance of this symbol, which becomes clearer with time, heralds imminent death. In Death Mark, we try to discover the secret of the mark and stop this madness in order to save only ourselves, but also our companions.
The game clearly draws inspirations from Japanese folklore and urban legends. When it comes to visuals, all backgrounds were prepared with great attention to detail – the atmosphere of anxiety accompanies us at every step. In the game, in addition to classic visual novel mechanics, we have the opportunity to explore places and buildings composed of many separate areas, where we move with arrows in the first-person perspective. There are also simple combat sequences, during which we have to choose the right items from our inventory at the right moment. Saving all the heroes requires focusing on the twists and turns of the story and carefully searching every nook and cranny, all in an atmosphere of horror, with atmospheric music and ghosts popping up at us.
