There are 25 characters in Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled, but at first you have access to only 8 basic characters, such as:

1. Crash Bandicoot
2. Dr. Neo Cortex
3. Tiny Tiger
4. Coco Bandicoot
5. Dr. N. Gin
6. Dingodile
7. Polar
8. Pura

In adventure mode you can unlock new characters, including bosses that you can defeat:

1. Ripper Roo (will be unlocked once you defeat him in N Sanity Beach)
2. Papu Papu (will be unlocked once you defeat him in The Lost Ruins)
3. Komodo Joe (will be unlocked once you defeat him in Glacier Park)
4. Pinstripe (will be unlocked once you defeat him in Citadel City)
5. Fake Crash (will be unlocked once you defeat him in Purple Gem Cup)

In Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled a lot of new characters have been added to the game:

• Nitros Oxide (will be unlocked once defeating him in Gem Stone Valley)
• N. Tropy (will be unlocked after you beat his times in Time Trial)
• Crunch (can be bought in Pit Stop for 1500 Wumpa Coins)
• Krunk (can be bought in Pit Stop for 1500 Wumpa Coins)
• Small Norm (can be bought in Pit Stop for 1500 Wumpa Coins)
• Big Norm (can be bought in Pit Stop for 1500 Wumpa Coins)
• Nash (can be bought in Pit Stop for 1500 Wumpa Coins)
• N. Trance (can be bought in Pit Stop for 1500 Wumpa Coins)
• Real Velo (can be bought in Pit Stop for 1500 Wumpa Coins)
• Geary (can be bought in Pit Stop for 1500 Wumpa Coins)
• Zam (can be bought in Pit Stop for 1500 Wumpa Coins)
• Zem (can be bought in Pit Stop for 1500 Wumpa Coins)
• Penta Penguin (unlocked after cheat input - HOLD L1 and R1 in the main menu and - down, right, triangle, down, left, triangle, up)

Each character represents three statistics such as speed, acceleration and maneuverability. They fall into three categories:

1. Beginner - has low speed, moderate acceleration and very good maneuverability
2. Intermediate - here the characters are divided into two groups. Half of them have all the statistics equally, while the other half has moderate speed, very good acceleration and poor maneuverability.
3. Advanced - characters have very good speed, weak acceleration and very poor maneuverability

Additionally, after choosing a character you can choose the skin for your hero. For each character there are from 4 to 8 different patterns. Initially not all of them are available, but you can unlock them by making progress in the Adventure mode.
