Races and units SpellForce 3 Guide

Last update: 13 December 2017

There are no distinct differences between the three playable races. They all have almost the same buildings and gather almost the same resources. The differences are mainly in their units. This chapter contains descriptions of all races and their available units.

Note - even though there are differences between units from different races, they are all made with one schematic. The first two units are the simplest ones, they can be recruited in a main building in your starting sector and they require only food and wood. The four next units are your main force, they can be recruited in barracks and require food and iron (you can mine it when your buildings reach level two). The next three units can be classified as an elite, they require food and a special resource (different for each faction) - these units can be recruited only after unlocking the third level for your buildings. The last unit is a siege unit that can be recruited in a blacksmith where you can also upgrade units from the second level.

Humans

The most balanced faction. Has mediocre basic units but also powerful elite units such as Man-At-Arms or Paladin. It has a good economic and can build two different defense buildings - towers that are available on the first and third level of your buildings.

Units:

  1. Recruit - a basic infantry unit. Deals small damage and is vulnerable to smash and pierce damage (arrows). (3 per a squad).
  2. Looter - a basic ranged unit. Throws torches that deal fire damage on a small area. Vulnerable to slash and pierce damage. (3 per a squad).
  3. Soldier - a more powerful version of a Recruit. Deals more damage and has the same weaknesses: smash and pierce damage. Can be upgraded in blacksmith (3 per a squad).
  4. Halberdier - great against cavalry. Vulnerable to slash and pierce damage. Can be upgraded in blacksmith (3 per a squad).
  5. Marksman - a ranged unit. Deals less damage than Looter but has a greater range. Also, deals damage that works great against more units than Looter. Vulnerable to all types of attacks. Can be upgraded in blacksmith (2 per a squad).
  6. Scout - a basic cavalry unit, almost the weakest in the game. Resistant to pierce damage, extremally vulnerable to stab damage. Can be upgraded in blacksmith (3 per a squad).
  7. Mentalist - casts AOE spells that deal fire or ice damage. Vulnerable to all types of attacks. (1 per a squad)
  8. Man-At-Arms - a heavily armored unit who deals a lot of smash damage that can hit a few enemies at the same time. Vulnerable to all physical damage (slash, smash, stab and pierce), vulnerable to the rest (mainly magic attacks). (3 per a squad)
  9. Paladin - a powerful cavalry, the most powerful in the game. Deals smash damage. Resistant to pierce damage, extremally vulnerable to stab damage. Can be resurrected once after death. (2 per a squad)
  10. Catapult - a siege unit. Great for destroying buildings but its stones can also damage enemy units. Vulnerable to all types of damage. (1 per a squad)

Elves

Overall, Elven units are better than Human ones but they aren't as numerous. They have two mage units and their archers can shoot from far away. They also have a hindered expansion - they get workers in new sectors only after leveling them up to level two.

Units:

  1. Novice - a basic infantry unit. They are better than their Orc or Human equivalents. Vulnerable to smash and pierce damage (2 per a squad).
  2. Ranger - a basic ranged unit, a little bit weaker than Humans' Marksman. Vulnerable to all types of attacks (2 per a squad).
  3. Guardian - an Elven warrior, much better than Humans' Soldier. Vulnerable to smash and pierce damage. Can be upgraded in a blacksmith. (2 per a squad)
  4. Warden - this unit works great against cavalry, better than their Human and Orc equivalents. Vulnerable to slash and pierce damage. Can be upgraded in a blacksmith. (2 per squad)
  5. Wanderer - a better version of a Ranger. Deals less damage than Orc Mercenary but shoots at a longer distance. Vulnerable to all types of attacks. Can be upgraded in a blacksmith. (2 per a squad)
  6. Pathfinder - almost the best cavalry in the game but much weaker than Humans' Paladin. Resistant to pierce damage but extremally vulnerable to stab damage. Can be upgraded in a blacksmith. (2 per a squad)
  7. Ice Mage - casts AOE spells that deal more damage than Mentalist's spells. However, this unit can cast only ice-based spells. Vulnerable to all types of damage. (1 per a squad)
  8. Protector - an elite unit, the best one against cavalry. Increases defense of nearby ally units. Resistant to all types of physical damage (slash, smash, stab and pierce), vulnerable to the rest of them (mainly magic attacks). (2 per a squad)
  9. Druid - a mage who moves on a mount, her spells can hurt many enemies at the same time with white magic and then ice. Resistant to pierce damage and extremally vulnerable to stabs. (2 per a squad)
  10. Ballista - a siege unit, a little bit weaker than it Human and Orc equivalents. Great for destroying buildings but its bolts can also damage enemy units. Vulnerable to all types of damage. (1 per a squad)

Orcs

This race has the least number of ranged units which means that they need to reach their enemies as fast as possible. This race has a monster unit called War Troll. Their economy is focused on quantity - their buildings don't have as many worker slots as Humans or Elves which means that you need to build more.

Units:

  1. Goblin Slayer - a basic infantry. Weak, but its strength lies in numbers. Vulnerable to smash and pierce damage. (4 per a squad)
  2. Orcish Warg Rider - the weakest cavalry unit in the game but it is cheap (doesn't require iron and can be recruited right away). Resistant to pierce damage, extremally vulnerable to stab damage. (2 per a squad)
  3. Orcish Fighter - an upgraded infantry unit, better than Soldier and Guardian. Vulnerable to smash and pierce damage. Can be upgraded in a blacksmith. (2 per a squad)
  4. Orcish Spearman - a great unit against cavalry but weaker than Warden. Vulnerable to slash and pierce damage. Can be upgraded in a blacksmith. (2 per a squad)
  5. Orcish Hunter - deals the biggest amount of pierce damage but their distance is shorter than Wanderer. Vulnerable to all types of damage. Can be upgraded in a blacksmith. (2 per a squad)
  6. Orcish Marauder - an average cavalry unit, better than Scout but weaker than Pathfinder. Resistant to pierce damage, extremally vulnerable to stab damage. Can be upgraded in a blacksmith. (2 per a squad)
  7. Orcish Firemaster - an equivalent of Ice Mage but he deals fire damage. Vulnerable to all types of damage. (1 per a squad)
  8. War Troll - a powerful unit, deals a lot of smash damage to multiple units at the same time. Resistant to all types of damage (slash, smash, stab, pierce), vulnerable to the rest of them (mainly magic attacks). (1 per a squad)
  9. Orc Drummer - a support unit, doesn't deal any damage. His presence increases movement speed of allied units and slows down enemies. Vulnerable to all types of damage. (1 per a squad)
  10. Siege Troll - a siege unit. Its attacks can cause a lot of damage to buildings but also set fire around them. Vulnerable to all types of damage. (1 per a squad)
