Dune Director Reveals the Second Movie Will Focus on a Different Character
The movie's director reveals that if there will be a second part of Dune, the main character will not be Paul Atreides played by Timothée Chalamet, but a different character that the audience will get to know in the first part.
Although Dune hasn't debuted in cinemas yet, and the fate of the series remains uncertain, director Denis Villeneuve is already revealing potential plans for the second part of the movie, stating that the new main character will be Chani, played by Zendaya.
Villeneuve's film is based on Frank Herbert's 1965 novel which tells the story of Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet. Therefore, the decision that the main character is to be changed in the sequel is surprising, but perhaps its justification will appear in the film which is to hit the cinemas next month. During an interview with the Italian magazine Il Venerdi di Repubblica, Villeneuve said what follows:
"I can't wait to shoot the second part of Dune to get [Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya] back together. Knowing that in the next chapter Zendaya will be the protagonist of the story."
Focusing on Zendaya's character and telling the story from a different point of view than the novel, the previous movies and miniseries do can be an interesting move by the creators. Chani is an extremely interesting heroine, one of the warriors of the Fremen tribe and the daughter of the imperial planetologist, Liet-Kynes (who will be played by British actress Sharon Duncan-Brewster).
Zendaya, as an Emmy winner and industry acclaimed actress, should do well as the person who is to carry Dune 2. For now, however, we will be able to see her in a supporting role this September in Dune, which will focus on Chalamet's character.
