Witcher Saga Boom in the U.S. Continues, Reprints Were Necessary
The American branch of the Orbit Publishing House has commissioned the printing of over 500,000 new copies of all eight books belonging to The Witcher cycle. All because of the increased interest in Andrzej Sapkowski's works caused by the Netflix series.
The commercial success of The Witcher series from Netflix has led to an increased interest in other works from the popular universe, namely games from CD Projekt RED and, of course, book originals by Andrzej Sapkowski. The first volume of short stories, The Last Wish, hasn't left top positions on the prestigious New York Times bestseller list for three weeks. The increased popularity of The Witcher books has led to some bookstores simply running out of copies. This forced the American branch of Orbit to print over 500,000 copies of all eight novels about the adventures of Geralt's of Rivia and his companions.
At this point, someone could say that 500,000 doesn't seem like such a huge number, especially if we are talking about the American market. However, it should be remembered that physical copies are only a part of all copies of Witcher books that have reached readers. Their digita versions and audiobooks, featuring the acclaimed British reader Peter Kenny, are also very popular.
Andrzej Sapkowski (as well as at least some of us) would probably like The Witcher book frenzy to last as long as possible. However, we may suspect that now that the excitement about the premiere of the first season of the series has started to slowly fall, the interest in the novels should also decrease somewhat. Their popularity will probably skyrocket again in the vicinity of the planned next year's premiere of the second season of Netflix's show, whose production started last week.
