Wesley Snipes Reportedly Hated Ryan Reynolds and Nearly Strangled Blade 3 Director. „I Don’t Think Anybody Involved with That Film Is Happy with the Results”
The situation on the set of Blade 3 was reportedly complicated, and Wesley Snipes was said to not get along with the show's director and Ryan Reynolds, who also played there.
The making of Blade 3 was reportedly a very demanding process, and the atmosphere on set was tense. According to reports, the show's star, Wesley Snipes, did not get along with either his set mate, Ryan Reynolds, or the film's director, David Goyer. Working on this Marvel superhero production was reportedly a big challenge for everyone.
In addition, according to Patton Oswalt, who spoke to The AV Club [via The Hollywood Reporter], Snipes had a very poor relationship with the director, whom he once almost strangled.
And he tried to strangle the director, David Goyer. We went out that night to some strip club, and we were all drinking. And there were a bunch of bikers there, so David says to them, “I’ll pay for all your drinks if you show up to set tomorrow and pretend to be my security”. Wesley freaked out and went back to his trailer. And the next day, Wesley sat down with David and was like, “I think you need to quit. You’re detrimental to this movie”. And David was like, ‘Why don’t you quit? We’ve got all your close-ups, and we could shoot the rest with your stand-in.’ And that freaked Wesley out so much that, for the rest of the production, he would only communicate with the director through Post-it notes. And he would sign each Post-it note “From Blade”.
When Goyer was asked about the situation, the director only explained that he used to be friends with Snipes, but that's in the past. He didn't go into the details of the situation, and only added that probably no one has good memories of working on Blade 3 and is not happy with the final results.
Let’s just say I have tremendous respect for Wesley as an actor. He used to be a friend. We’re not friends anymore. I am friends with Patton and I worked with Patton since so … I don’t think anyone involved in that film had a good experience on that film, certainly I didn’t. I don’t think anybody involved with that film is happy with the results. It was a very tortured production.
As for Reynolds – it turns out that here the problem was character differences. The men are their opposites and have completely different senses of humor, which led to some disagreements. Reporter Chris Parry revealed that on the set of Blade: Trinity, Snipes addressed Reynolds with the derogatory word cracker, which is a disdainful term for a poor, white, person usually from the southern United States.
However, from the statements of both actors, it seems that they have no hard feelings for each other and whatever there was between them then is no longer valid. The fact that they appeared together in Deadpool & Wolverine is also a perfect confirmation of this.
This is how Snipes recently described his relationship with Reynolds and his sense of humor during an interview for EW:
I'm not tuned in that way. So I thought, “Well, it's a little over the top for me.” But seeing him do it in this context [in Deadpool & Wolverine] made a lot of sense. And seeing him do it and do it well, Ryan does something that most people can't do. He's unique in that way, and he's found a fantastic niche for himself doing what he does. Deadpool is Ryan Reynolds all day long. So it was enjoyable. It was enjoyable to work with him. It was enjoyable to revisit.
Reynolds, on the other hand, said in an interview with IGN that reports of their conflict were exaggerated, and he agreed about the differences in their characters, and noted that he was actually dealing with Blade, not Snipes, while working on that film, and respectfully referred to his methodical approach to acting: „My personality is the polar opposite of Wesley. I never met Wesley, I only met Blade, and he is a method actor”.
