Valve Humbled; Fans Ported CSGO to Source 2 in 6 Months

A group of fans ported the basic elements of CS:GO to Source 2 in just a few months. How the project looks in action can be seen thanks to the extensive gameplay.

A group of fans has ported Counter-Strike: Global Offensive to the Source 2 engine.

  1. The developers have released a video with the first gameplay from the project.
  2. Converting the basic elements of CS:GO to Source 2 took the authors six months.
  3. The project is built based on s&box, an upcoming game from Facepunch, conceived as a successor to Garry's Mod. The title will use Source 2.
  4. As of now, it is unknown when we will be able to play this fan project.

Looking at the video, you may be surprised by the lack of big changes in the visuals. However, that's not what the project is about. Source 2 is simply a more modern and stable engine that also has fewer bugs. Therefore, moving CS:GO to this technology would improve the game and facilitate its further development.

The developers are making it for fun, so we shouldn't expect it to replace Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The fact that a group of fans has achieved so much porting CS:GO to Source 2, however, puts the pace of work at Valve in a negative light, as can be seen from the YouTube comments under the video:

vinicius de Oliveira:

"6 months to community v 10 years to valve, big W for us."

Aquarius:

"Valve community be like: 'Fine, I'll do it myself'."

Enso:

"This shows how lazy Valve is."

Drif:

"Imagine what fans will be able to achieve in s&box in the future."

It's worth clarifying that we've known for quite some time that Valve is working on a version of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive running on Source 2, but so far the company hasn't officially revealed anything tangibleabout it, and given this developer's history, it's quite possible that we'll have to wait quite a while for this project. Until recently, it seemed that it could happen as early as this month, but according to recent reports the project has suffered another delay.
