Homeworld 3 is a strategy about building mighty fleets. You can be the best strategist, but if you don’t have ships to back it up, you will not win. That is why building a proper army is very important. However, you can’t do it without limits. There is a population cap, which blocks you from creating hundred of units. Let’s talk about it.

Population Cap in Homeworld 3 Explained

It may not be visible at the first glance, but there are 2 Population caps:

  1. Family cap – It is a general restriction. It works at the unit group level (for example Corvette or Frigate). If your Frigate cap is 50, you will not be able to build more ships of this kind, even if your unit cap is not full. It means that if you have 15 of Assault, Ion and Suppression Frigates each (45 in total), you will be able to build only 5 of Support and Mine Frigates (up to 50).
  2. Unit Cap – each unit has its own cap, different from the family one. It prevents players from building one type of ship. You have to remember though, that you still are restricted by a Family cap. Even if you have not reached unit limit, you will not be able to build more ships in the case of full family cap.

How to Deal with Unit Cap in Homeworld 3

Unit Cap is connected to the mode you pick. It is locked during the Campaign but can be increased in War Games thanks to some Artifacts. You can surpass the cap though. It can be through events (like free ships at the beginning of the mission) or capturing hostile vessels.

If you have reached the population cap and want to build some more ships, you have to destroy an unnecessary vessel. It may be through Retire option or sending them to honorable death. If you want to learn more useful tips, you should read our Homeworld 3 guide.
