Ubisoft Drops Tom Clancy's Name From XDefiant's Title

Ubisoft has removed the phrase „Tom Clancy's” from the title of online shooter XDefiant. The decision was made due to the factions in the game now also including characters from the publisher's other brands.

Ubisoft made a surprising move, renaming its upcoming free-to-play shooter Tom Clancy's XDefiant to simply XDefiant.

Changes in XDefiant

The game was announced in last July and a month later closed beta tests were conducted. After that, the project went off the radar.

  1. Changing the title to XDefiant was announced on the occasion of the announcement of the next tests.
  2. The decision to remove "Tom Clancy's" from the title is due to the fact that the reality of the game has been expanded - factions inspired by brands such as Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six, The Division or Ghost Recon will be joined by characters from other Ubisoft series. At the moment no details were provided.
  3. The new tests have been dubbed "XDefiant Insider Sessions." They will have a closed nature, and their participants will face the developers.
  4. Testing will take place only on PC. Participants will be selected from those who register on the game's official website.

The decision is surprising, but it may prove beneficial. Ubisoft already has two upcoming free-to-play shooters using Tom Clancy's brand - Tom Clancy's The Division: Heartland and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Frontline. Changes made in XDefiant, including in particular the addition of factions from other series, will help this game stand out from other titles of the publisher.

XDefiant is scheduled for release on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5. The project will also be available on Google Stadia and Amazon Luna streaming services. For now, the developers have not announced a planned release date.
