Ubisoft Canceled Ghost Recon Frontline, Splinter Cell VR and Two Other Games
Ubisoft has announced the cancellation of work on four games. Two of them were never announced. The others are Splinter Cell VR and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Frontline.
During today's presentation of financial results for Q1 2022/23 Ubisoft announced the cancelation of work on four games, including Splinter Cell VR and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Frontline. The games were to be canceled due to the "changing financial environment" (via VGC).
Ghost Recon: Frontline
Definitely more interesting is the case of Ghost Recon: Frontline, which has been sparking considerable controversy since the announcement. Mainly because of what it was supposed to be - a free-to-play battle royale game, of which there are plenty on the market today. Criticism from players was so intense that Ubisoft decided to delay closed beta testing of the game on the eve of its launch - in theory to fine-tune it.
However, a few months later, rumors surfaced online that the the project had been rebooted. Now we know that it was canceled, and the Ubisoft Bucharest studio responsible for it will deal with something else.
Sam Fisher's crocodile tears
The same is true of Ubisoft Massive. This branch of the French company worked on the aforementioned Splinter Cell VR. We never learned much about this game. It was announced in 2020 - along with Assassin's Creed VR - and was to be created with the support of studios located in Dusseldorf, Mumbai and the UK (Ubisoft Reflections). Sam Fisher fans - waiting for the remake of the first game - are unlikely to be angered by this decision.
Ubisoft Massive, on the other hand, will be able to concentrate on developing Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora - which suffered a significant delay - and a sandbox Star Wars game.
We don't know anything about the other two of Ubisoft's four canceled titles and it will probably stay that way.
