We are still waiting for the release of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, but in the meantime we have no reason to complain about a lack of excitement, as new noteworthy fan projects are released every now and then. The latest is True Stalker.
It is a standalone F2P game built on the foundations of Call of Pripyat. GSC Game World allows for the creation of such mods that do not require ownership of any of the official installments of the series, as long as they are not commercial in nature.
True Stalker offers a new campaign with emphasis on the story aspect. The action takes place some time after the events of Call of Pripyat. We take on the role of a young stalker named Alex, who has already made several expeditions into the Zon, but until now has not ventured into its more dangerous regions. The game begins when he undertakes his first expedition outside the Cordon.
In True Stalker you will find 13 locations. Some of them are completely new, while others are heavily reworked versions of old maps. The project uses an improved version of the game engine implemented by OpenXRay, thanks to which it offers nicer graphics than Call of Pripyat.
In addition, the action takes place in summer, which provides a significantly different experience of exploring the Zone. Many fresh visual elements have also been added, plus the project uses a new interface called CORRYZERON.
All in all, this adds up to a noteworthy project. True Stalker is pretty, ambitious, and on top of that, the changes made and the emphasis on the story make the whole thing more than just another variation on the sandbox theme of Anomaly.
