Todd Howard Praises Starfield's New-old Engine: 'It Plays Great'
Todd Howard talked about the technical layer of Starfield and assured that, despite 30 fps on consoles, the game plays just fine.
Bethesda's Todd Howard gave an interview on the episode of the Kinda Funny podcast, during which he talked about the technical layer of Starfield.
- Howard stresses that the whole team is very happy with the game engine. Starfield is the first production to use Creation Engine 2, a new version of Bethesda's proprietary technology. The developers have been working on it throughout the eight years of work on Starfield.
- Among other things, the engine offers real-time generated global illumination and volumetric light effects. The developers also put a lot of effort into the physics.
- Engine optimization was key. This is due to the way the game's task system works. When we start a quest, other adventures are not turned off. All quests run in parallel, which often leads to chaotic and unpredictable results.
- The 30 fps limit in console versions proved to be a controversial decision, but Todd Howard assures that despite this, Starfield "plays great" and in terms of gameplay experience it is the most enjoyable game in the studio's output so far.
- The developers did not consider introducing a 60 fps mode with simplified graphics, as they want every player to have the same experience in Starfield.
Starfield is heading to PC, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X. The release will take place on September 6, this year. At the same time, the game will also be available on Game Pass, both on PC and Xbox consoles.
It is worth mentioning that recently great excitement was aroused by the announcement that AMD will be Bethesda's exclusive technology partner on Starfield. Many gamers are concerned that this means no official support for DLSS.
