Baldur’s Gate 3 Time Limit Explained
Time limit in BG3 is connected to long rests. They push some events forward. But don’t worry, as it is very restricted. In most cases you can sleep as long as you wish, you can’t fail the main quest, but there are some exceptions.
If you come closer to an important place with an event, and use a long rest without completing it, time may pass. For example:

At some point you will find a boy who is lured by harpies. If you do nothing with it and use a long rest, the child will die.
There are many more examples in which long rest will progress side stories in this way.
At the same time, if an important character will tell you that something will happen next day, it will. After a long rest this event will take place. In the case you wanted to prepare or pick a different route, you will lose this chance.
However, you may miss something even if you don’t sleep. Interactions with your companions and important events tend to happen while you take a long rest, and it is one of the main ways to progress them. So, those precious moments in the camp are important aspects of telling the story.
