If you have grown up in the golden era of MMORPGs, you might remember a game called Lineage 2. If you still hold it dearly in your heart, but would like to try something more modern, why not give Throne and Liberty a shot? This free-to-play title developed by the same Korean studio, NCsoft, is gaining popularity, and despite currently being available in Early (Advanced) Access, it draws in impressive amount of players on Steam (via SteamDB). What about other platforms though? Is the game available on older ones like PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch? This would definitely boost the number of fans and populate the vast world of Solisium. Here you will learn whether it is possible to enjoy this production on those previous generation consoles.

Throne and Liberty Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Xbox One release explained

As much as we would like to have our favorite consoles like Nintendo Switch, PS4 or Xbox One supported indefinitely, it is simply not possible due to technological advancement. Those platforms have their limitations and cannot be upgraded like PC. Even though, Throne and Liberty doesn’t have that high requirements, creators are still restricted when it comes to development. Probably due to that reason, in the official FAQ, NCsoft studio shared plans to work only with current generation devices, meaning Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Different architectures of multiple systems can make it challenging to keep all the platforms in sync, considering that the game supports crossplay. It can be extra difficult especially for Nintendo Switch, which is already said to be soon superseded by its next iteration. Of course, this platform is not forgotten yet. We cannot forget about well-designed titles that work buttery smooth on Switch like Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.

Despite the fact that the chances are rather slim to see Throne and Liberty on Switch, another handheld, Steam Deck, can be an alternative when it comes to playing this MMORPG on the go. Currently, on the game’s Steam page the support for it is labelled as “Unknown”, yet protondb shows that it is possible to enjoy it there.

The developers’ decision to support only current gen devices seems to make perfect sense, as releasing games on multiple platforms, including older ones, can lead to increased development costs and additional problems and limitations. There is a reason why such a big title like Grand Theft Auto Online which originates from PS4 / Xbox One has eventually stopped supporting some features on those consoles.
