The lovecratfian RPG Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones hits Kickstarter

Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones, a Lovecraftian RPG by Cultic Games, is now raising funds for development on Kickstarter.

Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones—a Lovecraftian horror role-playing game of loss and madness by the debuting studio Cultic Games—went live on Kickstarter to raise funds for development. The title draws inspiration from the works of H. P. Lovecraft and takes place in the universe he created, taking the players on a journey from Arkham to the Abyss itself. Stygian is to combine rich role-playing options with tactical, turn-based combat, very much like the one in Heroes of Might & Magic series. All of the above will be presented to us in the form of hand-drawn, two-dimensional visuals bearing a strong resemblance to illustrations from the 1920s.

The developers of Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones promise to give us an immersive story with elements of actual H.P. Lovecraft’s works interwoven with it. In the game, we are not out to save the world as it is already doomed beyond deliverance. Our goals are to pursue our own objectives, be it salvation or vendetta. The main storyline is described as follows:

On what is now known as the Black Day, under the shadow of the Great Old Ones, the world you knew vanished, and with it your hopes, dreams and loved ones. For reasons unknown, the city of Arkham was removed from the carcass of Earth to an Other place under alien stars, a twilight realm between dimensions. One memory in particular looms from the time before the catastrophe, your encounter with a peculiar fellow called the Dismal Man, who instructed you: ‘Find me beyond Arkham, after the Black Day.’ […] Why does Arkham endure while the rest of the world has been obliterated? What does the Dismal Man want from you? How much will you sacrifice to survive? And above all, who is the Dismal Man?

In Stygian, we will create our own character from scratch, selecting his or her background (each with its own origin story), skills, traits, and belief system. The last element is especially important since it directly determines how our character regains sanity (the lack of which has its pros and cons) as well as provides us with unique dialogue options. Some very bizarre companions can join our party as well, such as a reanimated Great War soldier that constantly relives the horrors of trench warfare.

If you are interested in Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones, head to its official website and consider backing it on Kickstarter (so far, more than 750 backers have pledged almost €18,700 of the €55,000 goal). You can find a lot of information on the game at its fundraising campaign page. If successfully funded, Stygian will likely launch in late 2017 on PC with Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. The title has already been greenlit on the Steam Greenlight program.
