Sometimes, when fans want something and the developers listen, it can backfire badly. Such is the case of The Forever Winter, where players enamored after alpha tests, asked for Early Access version of the game. As the biggest complain about the production is its performance and technical state, consisting of low fps, crashes, inability to join friends’ matches, or even payment issues, otherwise TFW is praised for interesting mechanics and fantastic world building. Let’s focus on the strongest points of this title and learn more about factions that scour, ruined by never-ending war, environment.

Factions in The Forever Winter explained

In the ruthless world of The Forever Winter, the war is raging for decades. But why? Who is fighting and why are they locked in stalemate battle? The latter question cannot be clearly answered, as in the lore of the game it’s unknown who started the war, yet we know who the sides of conflict are. Let’s try to set some boundaries between the hostile factions to distinguish between them and shed more light on who they are.

  1. Europa – a mega country including former North America and West Europe regions is a technologically advanced faction focused on cybernetics and huge war machines. While Europa territories have been made unable to grow any crops, the protein synthesized food is their daily bread. Civilians are under oppression of militant government while still going to work, shopping yet they can’t get far from their homes. While conscription is not mandatory, being a soldier still gives more freedom than trying to live outside of military.
  2. Eurasia, another conglomerate of most East and some of Central Asia is no less technologically advanced than Europa. However, their most focus is put on bio and agrotech allowing to grow engineered crops. Their forces consist of biologically altered humans who are now more cyborgs than men. On the frontlines they fight to earn their maintenance and be able to live another day. The flesh needed to be converted into war-droids is “obtained” from poorer citizens of this region are treated as meat to be enhanced by exoskeletons.
  3. Euruska is a federation of former Slavic States and parts of Africa. They have taken Eurasian side of the conflict and pushed it to the extreme. Their forces are biomechanical atrocities that treat humans as a material to be sculpted. Most of the population lives in slums and shantytowns or in the undergrounds of the ruined Lost Angeles. This faction’s civilians have learned to survive near the frontlines by joining private military companies, becoming mercenaries, warlords, weapon dealers, and finally scavengers…

Those descriptions are just scratching the surface of what has been prepared lore-wise by the team of 20-ish developers from Fun Dog Studios. More elaborate information about the world, can be found in a great material prepared by YouTuber by the name of Riloe.

If you are drawn to the postapocalyptic vision weaved by the creators, remember that water is crucial for survival in this dire world. Additionally, remember that even though the game will allow for offline play it is always a good idea to bring friends to help out in co-op. Good luck scav!
