GTA: SA Designer Revealed Perhaps the Biggest Oversight in Iconic Open World

A Rockstar studio veteran discussed the issue of bugs in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and recommended a mod that fixes them.

Obbe Vermeij was the former director of the technical department at Rockstar North studio, who worked in this team from 1995 (when it was still known as DMA Design) until 2009. This veteran has recently been sharing a lot of interesting facts from his career. The latest ones are about Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

  1. Vermeij admitted that GTA: SA suffers from many technical issues and recommended that those who want to play this classic on PC today should download the SilentPatch mod by a modder known as CookiePLMonster. This project fixes 165 technical issues in San Andreas.
  2. In a conversation under this thread on X, one player asked Obbe what bug in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas he would like to be able to fix before the game's release. The developer responded that the one who makes random elements changes when the player goes off the map. According to him, this is probably the worst bug the developers missed during production. This is quite a surprising answer, as most players have probably never dealt with such a situation.
  3. Obbe Vermeij also has no problem admitting that he is responsible for many of the bugs that SilentPatch fixes.

Vermeij pointed out that many models in the game have offensive words in their names (e.g. one of the rifles is called "cuntgun"). The dev stated that such humor helps creators cope with stress, stating:

Everything that isn't visible to players often contains uncensored elements. This is something that developers do to not go crazy during development.

Repairing the GTA trilogy.

CookiePLMonster prepared separate versions of SilentPatch for each game in this trilogy:

  1. SilentPatch for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  2. SilentPatch for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
  3. SilentPatch for Grand Theft Auto 3

Each of these mods works independently, but for the best effect, it's recommended to install them together with the SilentPatch DDraw component (which fixes a number of engine errors), as it is compatible with all the necessary installments of this trilogy.
