Although the fourth installment of the adventures of Keanu Reeves' assassin was supposed to be the last one (supposed to, because the fifth installment was nevertheless announced), the franchise itself is doing well, and the universe of John Wick is being developed with spin-offs being made and awaiting release. One of the upcoming projects is The Continental, a miniseries telling the story of the eponymous hotel chain - places where professional assassins can find peace and refuge.

The role of Cormac, the owner of the New York branch, went to Mel Gibson, a top actor of the 1980s and 1990s, who in recent times, however, has been associated with anti-Semitic statements and problems with the law. Here is how producer Allen Hughes addressed the engagement of the controversial star:

"I think he fit the role, he fit what we needed, because of his track record as an actor. I will leave it to others to discuss the other issues, because this is not a black-and-white matter, and I don't want to be used for clickbait quotes. It's a treacherous game. I have my own personal beliefs in life, including on all of this, but here I am to keep people entertained. At the beginning of my career, I wasn't so careful.

Because of his previous roles, skills and experience he [Mel Gibson - ed. note] brought what we needed to this role. I don't think anyone else would have been a better fit for this creation," reads the interview with IGN.

Recall that the star's career began to decline in 2006, when he was arrested for DUI. In turn, in 2010, recordings surfaced in which the actor made racist comments and threatened his ex-girlfriend.

The Continental will be available in September 2023 on Prime Video. The show will consist of three episodes.
