The Callisto Protocol Sales Disappoint Analysts; Expectations Were High

Last December, The Callisto Protocol debuted on the market. Unfortunately, the long-awaited horror game was riddled with all sorts of technical issues. This most likely affected the game's lower than originally expected sales.

The debut of the hyped-up The Callisto Protocol fell far short of the developers' expectations, largely due to huge optimization problems which Striking Distance's game experienced on PCs shortly after release. Admittedly, in the end the developer managed to deal with most of the problems, but unfortunately the bad aftertaste among players remained. This was also reflected in lower than originally expected sales of the game.

As reported by MK-Odyssey, which analyzed reports from investment companies, the costs incurred by Krafton to create The Callisto Protocol amounted to about $162 million. This is the total amount the company paid to Striking Distance over three years.

Given the game's sizable budget, investors were hoping for equally impressive popularity. According to analysts at Samsung Securities, the original expectations were that The Callisto Protocol would already reach the threshold of 5 million copies sold. However, reality has brutally verified these - let's not hide it - exaggerated expectations. According to estimates, the horror game from Striking Distance has so far found "only" 2 million owners.. Thus, it will be difficult to hit the desired target.

These very optimistic estimates did not pass in the web without an echo. Reddit users related these exorbitant expectations to equally optimistic sale expectations of Dead Space 3 from 2013. As we learned at the time, EA Motive's title also failed to achieve the planned results - which led to the series being shelved for almost a decade (this will be changed by the release of the remake of the first part scheduled for January 27, 2023).
