17 years ago, the Twilight movie debuted in theaters, launching the famous saga. The films were as popular (or even more so) as the books on which they were based. But while they had crowds of fans, there was also a sizable group of people who hated the productions and accused them of ruining the vampire genre. In fact, there is still such a belief among many people today.

Robert Pattinson, who played the lead role in Twilight – the vampire Edward – addressed this. During an interview with GQ Spain, he commented with disbelief that people still haven't let go of Twilight even nearly 20 years after its release.

I love that people keep telling me, “Man, Twilight ruined the vampire genre”. Are you still stuck on that s–? How can you be sad about something that happened almost 20 years ago? It’s crazy.

Despite the passage of time, it seems that Twilight evokes no less emotions than it did after its release. Fans of the vampire genre have been incensed that Edward and Bella's adventures “ruined the vampire genre.” Pattinson notes, however, that after such a long time it shouldn't matter anymore.

However, there is no denying the fact that Twilight has taken its toll on the genre and has had an impact on shaping it in the modern era. On its wave of popularity, The Vampire Diaries series was created, which was also supposed to cultivate the “harmful” image of attractive and romantic vampires. And since Twilight, there has been no other equally popular production about vampires that has had such an impact on popular culture that it can be said that Twilight's achievements have been overshadowed.
