Layoffs at Take-Two; Rockstar's Owner Prepares for New Successes
Take-Two has confirmed reports of layoffs in several divisions of the company. One of them is most likely the Private Division, the team responsible for the publication of Kerbal Space Program 2.
Last month, Take-Two, owner of Rockstar and 2K Games, announced that it plans to cut jobs in order to save $50 million. We didn't have to wait long for the first decisions on the matter. The company confirmed the reports by Bloomberg agency reporter Jason Schreier, saying that the cuts affect several divisions of the company.
Confirmation of layoffs
In a statement provided to the editors of PCGamer, Take-Two acknowledged that it had made layoffs, but did not reveal how many employees lost their jobs. Nor do we know the names of the specific departments affected. According to Schreier's sources, the job cuts were to affect, among others, the Private Division, the publisher responsible for, among other things, the Kerbal Space Program series.
"We can confirm that there have been reductions in our US teams, mainly in the corporate and publishing areas [...]. The impact of these changes on our development teams in the US has been minimal," said Take-Two spokesman Alan Lewis.
Not only in the US
Unfortunately, the layoffs will not spare divisions operating outside the United States..
"Outside the United States, we have initiated procedures in accordance with local laws, which we anticipate may result in similar reductions," Lewis added.
Reason for layoffs
As a reason for the layoffs, a representative of Take-Two cited that the corporation "has experienced strong growth in recent years" and "the necessary steps are being taken to position the company for long-term success.".
In turn, in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said that the corporation has no plans for "extensive reductions" in its workforce. What will be the final outcome? We will find out in time.
