Take-Two Boasts Excellent Sales of GTA 5
Grand Theft Auto V, despite being eight years old, continues to sell like hot cakes. In 2020, Rockstar's game was bought by 20 million people.
- Take-Two has revealed financial results for its latest fiscal quarter;
- GTA V continues to sell 'fantastically' with 20 million games shipped to stores and sold digitally in 2020, and a total of 140 million copies since launch day.
GTA V isn't slowing down. In its latest financial report, Take-Two revealed tha game's new sales figures. The game by Rockstar Games has reached 5 million people between October and December 2020, and digital sales, including copies shipped to stores, amounted to 20 million in the whole of last year.
The said 20 million copies is the second best annual result since Grand Theft Auto V was released in 2013 on PS3 and Xbox 360 (32.5 million copies of the game were sold then). Total sales exceeded 140 million copies (up to and including December 2020). The biggest share in this success is of course GTA Online, constantly updated with new content that attracts new people to the game's servers despite the passing years.
Of course, this is not the end. This year will see the release of an improved version of GTA V on PS5 and Xbox X Series S, so we can expect millions more copies sold and even better financial results for Take-Two.
Red Dead Redemption 2 also recorded a good result, having crossed the threshold 36 million copies shipped to stores. This is an improvement of one million compared to the second fiscal quarter of 2020 (July-September). Although when we compare this result to GTA V, we can see a gigantic gap in interest from gamers.
Take-Two achieved $ 860.9 million in net revenue in the reported period, of which as much as $728.5 million comes from digital distribution (62% of players make recurring purchases). The publisher plans to release 93 titles over the next five years, 72 of which are aimed at PC and consoles, and half of which are new installments of existing IPs.
