Stuttering and Crashing in Silent Hill 2 (SH2), Fans Report Technical Issues
If you are experiencing crashes or irritating stuttering in the remake of Silent Hill 2, you can find more information about those issues in this very article.
A huge burden weights on the shoulders of developers who have decided to take on a challenge of remaking iconic titles that shaped not only a genre, but also the industry, and even a whole generation of people. Such mark has been left by the original Silent Hill 2, now remade by creators from Bloober Team. While at the beginning it was destined only for PS5, the devs, rooted in Polish culture of PC gaming, convinced Konami to create a version of the game on that platform, too. It is not an easy task due to multitudes of possible hardware and software configurations, and it seems that some fans are unpleasantly surprised by stutters and even crashes in this refreshed production. Here you will learn more about the current situation.
Crashes and stutters in SH2 explained
It’s been more than two decades since the original Silent Hill 2 was released. To make it more accessible on contemporary devices, but also more appealing to modern audience, a remake was created. Judging on Early (Advanced) Access reviews on Steam, Bloober Team was successful in reanimating this gloomy, yet fascinating experience. Not without flaws, though, you can read about them in our review. Moreover, there are players affected by stutters and crashes deteriorating their frightening journey through the fog covered town somewhere in Maine. Can it be helped?
Sadly, so far there are no viable fixes for either of them. When it comes to the stutters, it is quite widespread problem pronounced in games using Unreal Engine. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been properly addressed by the devs. UE5, which drives SH2, is known for being stubborn to provide steady frametimes.
What is more concerning is that there are some fans who struggle with random crashes every now and then, yet for those there is no clear solution either. There are some voices that disabling Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) in Windows can help, yet it’s definitely not a silver bullet. We also shouldn’t forget about issues plaguing Intel’s 13th and 14th generation processors, that can be responsible for crashes in multiple games. If the issue happens to you very often, making it impossible to progress in any way, there is a post shared by one the developers instructing how to file an official support ticket.
As of now, the only real solution is patience in waiting for future patches that hopefully Bloober Team will provide. Looking at early reviews on Steam, the studio behind this title made a good job in recreating the original experience, as currently the reception is classified as “Overwhelmingly Positive”. Due to that, we can assume more optimizations will be done soon. Good luck!
